  • Description

At the offices of the Official Entertainments Industry Union (Sindicato del Espectaculo) in Madrid today (Thursday), more than 30 of Spain's leading film directors stage a sit-in to demand the release from prison of two of their colleagues arrested earlier this week during anti-government demonstrations.

The two detained directors are Jose Luis Egea and Juan Antonio Bardem - the latter won world-wide acclaim with his film "Death of a Cyclist", called "one of the most significant films to come out of post-Civil War Spain. They were arrested on Tuesday night (November 3) along with a number of other people who were demonstrating near the Central Atocha railway station as part of a Left-wing "worker commissions" demanding amnesty for all political prisoners - a nationwide appeal.

The 30 directors who staged the sit-in include Carlos Saura, Angelino Fons, Mario Camus and Alfonso Ungria - all asking that Union officials back the appeal for the release of Bardem and Egea.
