Background: Waddesdon Manor - with its fabulous art treasures and 150 acres of parkland - near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, bequeathed by the late James de Rothschild to the National Trust two years ago, was opened to the public July 1 for the first time VISNEWS filmed some of the paintings and antiques collected by four generations of the Rothschild family.

Started in 1880 the Manor was built to the design of French architect H.A. Pestailieur - and in its setting of fountains resembles a vast French Renaissance chateau.

The art collection includes Gainsborough's "The pink Boy" and a superb Rubens "Garden of Love". Views of Venice by Guardi hang in the East Gallery. These are his two largest paintings and were exhibited at Burlington House during the winter Exhibition of 1954-55.

In the Red Drawing Room, containing French furniture, is another Gainsborough - portrait of "The Prince of Wales" (later George IV) 1782 - Sevres porcelain and Savonnerie carpets.

Another treasure: a cabinet by Carlin inlaid with Sevres plaques with a white marble figure by Falconet on top.
