    Background: The General Assembly of the United Nations has asked South Africa to withdraw unconditionally from Namibia (South West Africa), and recommended economic sanctions to back up this demand. The vote on Wednesday (3 May) was 119 to none, and 21 nations abstained. The Assembly adopted a declaration and plan of action at the final meeting of a special 10-day session on Namibia. After the vote, Mr. Sam Nujoma, President of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO), spoke on his organisation's readiness to hold more talks on Namibia's future.
