Background: TROOPS LOYAL TO THE NIGERIAN SUPREME COMMANDER, MAJOR GENERAL IRONSI, HAVE BEEN ENDEAVOURING TO RESTORE LAW AND ORDER THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY FOLLOWING THE APPARENTLY ABORTIVE COUP D'ETAT ON SATURDAY. IN THE CAPITAL, LAGOS, NORMAL LIFE HAS RETURNED, ALTHOUGH TROOPS HAVE BEEN ON GUARD IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE CITY.

STRONG TROOP GUARDS WERE MOUNTED ON SATURDAY ALONG MAIN ROADS INTO LAGOS. ALONG THE ROAD TO LAGOS AIRPORT, NEAR MOGAMBO, TRAFFIC WAS BANKED UP FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS AS VEHICLES PASSED THROUGH A BARBED WIRE BARRICADE.

MEANWHILE THE SEARCH IS GOING ON FOR THE NIGERIAN PRIME MINISTER, SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, WHO WAS ABDUCTED BY TROOPS TAKING PART IN THE COUP. SO FAR, HE HAS NOT BEEN TRACED.

MAJOR GENERAL IRONSI HAS TAKEN OVER THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE COUNTRY. HE HAS SAID THAT ALL EXISTING LAWS AND REGULATIONS WILL REMAIN IN FORCE UNLESS CONTRARY INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN BY HIS MILITARY GOVERNMENT. THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT WILL ASSUME AUTHORITY UNTIL LIFE HAS RETURNED TO NORMAL.

MANY NIGERIANS HAVE WELCOMED THE ARMY'S ASSUMPTION OF POWER. IN SOME PARTS OF THE CAPITAL IT WAS GREETED BY SINGING AND DANCING IN THE STREET.
