  • Description

Men of the 33rd Irish Battalion assembled at Curragh Camp in County Kildare, August 10, before leaving to join the United Nations forces in the Congo Republic. About 750 troops will be included in the second airlift of Irish soldiers for the Congo.

Commander of the United Nations Irish contingent, Col. H.W. Byrne, left London Airport August 9, to take command of the 700 troops already in the Congo Republic's Kivu Province. He will become Brigade Commander when the second battalion arrives in about a weeks time.

In nearby Limerick, men of Southern Command were cheered when they marched through the streets before leaving for the assembly point. Some of the local public houses provided free barrels of beer for the departing soldiers.
