  • Description

A BIG PARADE WOUND THROUGH INDEPENDENCE SQUARE IN COLOMBO ON SUNDAY TO HONOUR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE WORKED IN THE GOVERNMENT'S 'GROW MORE FOOD' CAMPAIGN.

THE CAMPAIGN GOT UNDERWAY AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR. IT'S DESIGNED TO EASE FOOD SHORTAGES, AND EVENTUALLY TO MAKE CEYLON COMPLETELY SELF-SUFFICIENT IN FOOD PRODUCTION AND THUS SAVE VALUABLE FOREIGN CURRENCY FOR INDUSTRIAL IMPORTS.

THE PARADE WAS HEADED BY SOME OF THE 60,000 SCHOOLCHILDREN WHO TOOK PART. BEHIND THEM CAME THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. DUDLEY SENANAYAKE, RIDING IN A JEEP. HE ALIGHTED TO TAKE HIS POSITION ON THE OFFICIAL DAIS FOR THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE CEREMONY...THE GARLANDING OF THE GOVI RAJAS.

THE GOVI RAJAS WERE THE 'KING FARMERS', THE MEN WHOSE FARMS PRODUCED THE HIGHEST YIELD IN EACH OF 22 DISTRICTS.

MR. SENANAYAKE SAID THAT THE FUTURE OF CEYLON LAY IN THE HANDS OF THE YOUNG, AND IN AGRICULTURE. HE TOLD THE THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE SQUARE TO STOP LOOKING FOR WHITE-COLLAR JOBS AND RETURN TO THE LAND...HE CITED THE EXAMPLE OF A 16-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLBOY WHO USED HIS SPARE TIME TO CULTIVATE AN ACRE OF LAND AND PRODUCED A RECORD YIELD.
