  • Description

A HUGE CROWD ATTENDED AN INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS MEETING AT THE WHITE CITY STADIUM IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY). ATHLETICS FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA VIED WITH THE BEST THAT ENGLAND COULD OFFER, AND THERE WAS A SENSATIONAL FINISH TO THE INVITATION MILE EVENT.

THE ONE HUNDRED METRES ATTRACTED A GOOD FIELD, AND THE ENGLISH RUNNER B. KELLY JUST SNATCHED VICTORY FROM L. KRIZ OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA IN A TIME OF 10.6 SECONDS. NOT A WORLD-BEATER, BUT AN EXCITING CONTEST NONE-THE-LESS. THERE WAS A GASP FROM THE CROWD AS KRIZ FELL AT THE TAPE, AND SKIDDED ALONG ON THE GROUND.

THE 400 METRES WAS WON BY THE CZECH RUNNER J. TROUSIL. HE WON IN 47.2 SECONDS FROM J. ADEY OF ENGLAND. IT WAS A TOUGH RACE -- AND AT THE FINISH, TROUSIL COLLAPSED ON THE GROUND, EXHAUSTED.

THE SENSATION OF THE DAY CAME IN THE INVITATION MORLEY MILE. LINING UP AT THE START WERE MANY OF THE WORLD'S FINEST MILERS -- THOUGH WITH FAMOUS FRENCH SPRINTER JAZY, AND NEW ZEALAND ATHLETE PETER SNELL ABSENT, FEW THOUGHT THE RACE WOULD APPROACH WORLD RECORD TIME. CZECHOSLOVAKIA'S CHIEF HOPE LAY IN JOSZEF ODLOZIL -- THE OLYMPIC SILVER MEDAL HOLDER. JUERGEN MAY, THE MUSCULAR EUROPEAN RECORD HOLDER FROM EAST GERMANY WAS CONSIDERED A LIKELY PLACE-GETTER. BRITAIN'S MAIN HOPE LAY WITH ALAN SIMPSON AND THE 32-YEAR-OLD D. IBBOTSON. FROM KENYA CAME THE SURPRISES KIPRUGUT AND KEINO.

THE RACE BEGAN WITH IBBOTSON RACING INTO THE LEAD WITH KIPRUGUT CLOSE BEHIND HIM. PLACES REMAINED UNCHANGED UNTIL THE END OF THE SECOND LAP WHEN IBBOTSON RETIRED. THE KEINO PUT IN AN APPEARANCE CLOSE BEHIND HIS COUNTRYMAN KIPRUGUT. KEINO WAS CONTENT TO LET KIPRUGUT SHOW THE WAY UNTIL THEY CAME INTO THE STRAIGHT ON THE THIRD LAP. THEN, INCREASING HIS STRIDE HE RACED TO THE FRONT. KEINO FINISHED CLEAR OF THE FIELD BY TEN YARDS IN THE TIME OF 3 MINUTES, 54.2 SECONDS -- THE THIRD FASTEST MILE EVER RUN AND A NEW BRITISH ALL-COMERS RECORD. IT WAS ALSO THE FIRST TIME THAT A COLOURED RUNNER HAD BEATEN FOUR MINUTES FOR THE MILE. ODLOZIL WAS SECOND, AND ALAN SIMPSON THIRD.

THE MATCH ENDED WITH CZECHOSLOVAKIA BEATING ENGLAND BY 112 POINTS TO 111.
