  • Description

REACTING QUICKLY AGAINST PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S CONDEMNATION OF U.S. POLICIES IN VIETNAM, THE SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT ON WEDNESDAY EXPELLED THE CHIEF CORRESPONDENT OF AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE AND BEGAN TEARING DOWN REMAINS OF A FRENCH INDO-CHINA WAR MEMORIAL.

AT THE SOUTH EAST ASIA TREATY ORGANISATION CONFERENCE IN LONDON THIS WEEK THE FRENCH REPRESENTATIVE -- PRESIDENT DE GAULLE REFUSED TO SEND HIS FOREIGN MINISTER -- SAID HIS COUNTRY WAS OPPOSED TO U.S. POLICIES IN VIETNAM. HE ADDED THAT THERE COULD BE NO COMMON POSITION OR ACTION BY SEATO MEMBERS ON THE CONFLICT WHICH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE HAS SAID CAN ONLY BE SOLVED BY THE NEUTRALISATION OF NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM.

FOREIGN MINISTER, DR TRAN VAN DO, TERMED THE FRENCH POSITION AT THE SEATO CONFERENCE "AN UNFRIENDLY ACT." A MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE FRENCH POLICY INDIRECTLY SUPPORTED COMMUNIST AGGRESSION AGAINST SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE WAR MEMORIAL IN THE HEART OF SAIGON, ERECTED BY THE FRENCH WHEN THEY RULED THE COUNTRY, WAS PARTIALLY DESTROYED BY STUDENT RIOTING IN JANUARY 1964. WORKMEN, TOGETHER WITH CRANES TO LIFT BLOCKS OF STONE ON TO LORRIES, BEGAN DEMOLISHING IT SHORTLY AFTER THE CONFERENCE STATEMENT. THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO COMPLETE THE DEMOLITION FOLLOWS A RECENT THREAT BY STUDENTS THAT THEY WOULD DO IT THEMSELVES.

NIGHTLY TWO-HOUR BROADCASTS OVER SAIGON RADIO OF BROADCASTS SUPPLIED BY THE FRENCH CULTURAL MISSION HAVE BEEN STOPPED. DR TRAN VAN DO SAID THERE MAY BE OTHER MEASURES TAKEN BESIDES"IF THE SITUATION REQUIRES IT."
