  • Description

BETWEEN CORUMBA IN BRAZIL AND SANTA CRUZ IN BOLIVIA RUNS ONE OF THE SLOWEST AND MOST COLOURFUL TRAINS IN THE WORLD - KNOWN TO THOSE WHO TRAVEL ON IT AS THE 'SMUGGLERS SPECIAL'.

THE TRAIN, A WOOD BURNER RUNNING ON A NARROW TRACK, TAKES TWO AND A HALF DAYS TO COVER THE FOUR HUNDRED MILES BETWEEN CORUMBA AND SANTA CRUZ, AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 10 MILES AN HOUR.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ONLY ABOUT 40 PER CENT OF THE PASSENGERS USING THE TRAIN PAY THEIR FARE - TWELVE DOLLARS FIRST CLASS AND SIX DOLLARS BY SECOND CLASS - AND MOST OF THE PAYING PASSENGERS ARE SMUGGLERS. THEY SPEND A MAJOR PART OF THEIR TIME ON THE TRAIN.

THE SMUGGLERS CARRY SMALL AMOUNTS OF CONTRABAND ACROSS THE BORDER, INCLUDING SUCH ITEMS AS BABIES' SHOES, FRUIT, COSMETICS AND TOILETRY.

IN AN ATTEMPT TO BEAT THE SMUGGLERS FOUR CUSTOMS POSTS HAVE BEEN SET UP ALONG THE LINE, BUT THE SMUGGLERS HAVE COUNTERED BY EMPLOYING ARTFUL RUSES. OFTEN THE SMUGGLERS EXCHANGE BAGGAGE.

MANY OF THE SMUGGLERS ARE EMPLOYED BY LARGE BUYERS, WHILE OTHERS WORK ON A FREELANCE SYSTEM BY WHICH THEY MAKE A REASONABLE LIVING.
