MARITIME EXPERTS HERE ARE LIKENING YESTERDAY'S MASSIVE BLAZE ABOARD THE QUEEN ELIZABETH TO THE BIGGEST FIRE IN MARITIME HISTORY RIVALLING THE SINKING OF THE NORMANDY IN NEW YORK HARBOUR, IN 1942. THE QUEEN ELIZABETH ARRIVED HERE LAST YEAR TO UNDERGO REFIT AS A FLOATING UNIVERSITY. WORK WAS NEARLY COMPLETED AND BEFORE STARTING HER NEW ROLE THE QUEEN ELIZABETH WAS TO TAKE ON A CHARTER CRUISE.... THE FIRE STARTED AT THE STERN OF '8' DECK AND FEEDING ON THE TIMBER AND PAINT USED IN THE REFIT QUICKLY ENVELOPED THE ENTIRE SHIP. WORKMEN JUMPED FOR THEIR LIVES INTO THE SEA AND WERE PICKED UP BY PASSING VESSELS. FIREMEN ATTEMPTED TO CONTROL THE BLAZE, BUT IT WAS A HOPELESS JOB. FINALLY, AS THE HUGE VESSEL TOOK ON A 17 DEGREE LIST THEY RETREATED TO A SAFE DISTANCE. THIS MORNING THE FIRE WAS STILL BURNING FIERCELY AND THE LIST HAD INCREASED TO 20 DEGREES. ONE OF THE REAR MASTS, THE FUNNEL AND PART OF THE BRIDGE HAD COLLAPSED.

NO MORE WATER IS BEING PUMPED ONTO THE FIRE. EXPERTS SAY THAT ONLY INCREMENTS THE DANGER OF THE SHIP TOPPLING. SO IT APPEARS THE FIRE WILL BE LEFT TO BURN ITSELF OUT.
