    Background: WEST GERMANY, MAINZ-ON-RHINE HARBOUR

West Germany police today (16/10) seized a record 2500 kilos of illicit marijuana from a ship in Hainz harbour. The drugs were hidden in straw bales inside cartoons labelled as brushes, and are believed to have come from Colombia. It's the largest marijuana haul ever made in the federal republic, and has an estimated street value of around 3 million U.S. dollars (10 million marks). A Colombian and a Dutch national are in custody in connection with the seizure. Both the Dutch and the Colombian governments have begun to take tougher lines on the smuggling racket - the Dutch recently ordered an approved youth club outlet to stop sales of marijuana, while the Bogota authorities have - with considerable US financial backing - slowed the flood of cocaine and marijuana onto the world's street markets although Colombia still supplies two thirds of the marijuana that reaches America, and three quarters of the cocaine.
