  • Description

    TODAY, AFTER THE
FIGHTING LAST YEAR, KASHMIR LOOKS PEACEFUL. THE INDIAN ARMY IS STILL THERE, BUT
IN SRINAGAR, THE CAPITAL, THEY GO WITHOUT ARMS AND STROLL ABOUT LIKE TOURISTS AT
    ANY OTHER RESORT.

THE RUINS OF WAR LIE IN THE BACKGROUND AND LITTLE REBUILDING IS EVIDENT. BEYOND
ARE THE PLANTATIONS AND WHERE LAST YEAR SOLDIERS STALKED, FARMERS WORK THE SOIL
    AND THE LAND FLOURISHES.

SRINAGAR IS CROWDED WITH TOURISTS AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. THE JHELUM RIVER
ATTRACTS MANY OF THEM, OTHERS GO TO THE CITY GARDENS TO PICNIC AND WATCH THE
    LOCAL PEOPLE PLAY GAMES.

UNDER THE TASHKENT DECLARATION, INDIA AND PAKISTAN HAVE WITHDRAWN THEIR TROOPS
FROM THE BATTLE AREAS BUT POLITICALLY THE KASHMIR PROBLEM IS NO NEARER TO A
    SOLUTION.

INDIA SAYS PAKISTAN HAS A PLAN TO ELIMINATE KASHMIR LEADERS AND CREATE PANIC AND
CONFUSION. PAKISTAN SAYS INDIA IS KEEPING KASHMIR UNDER A REIGN OF TERROR AND
THAT 100,000 PEOPLE HAD FLED TO THE PAKISTANI PART OF KASHMIR.
