Fifteen crew members of the Helma Entz were rescued from the sea by the Norwegian ship Ventura, 13 by the Shofuku Maru and two by the Japanese ship Shinsei Maru.

The German tanker was on its way to Yokkaichi, southwest of Nagoya, with 17,900 tons of Iranian oil.
