  • Description

Driving out spirits and devils is a commonplace yet lucrative part of Malayan native doctors' work. The Kelantan State 'witch' doctors are said to possess special abilities for this work.

In ones and twos or by the dozen, they chase devils and spirits from tormented bodies. As their assistants 'serenade' the patient, the doctor fights the spirits.

He dances and prances, shakes his head, challenges the spirits and sometimes falls temporary victim to his foe, lying in a faint for a short while.

Devil driving can take as long as five or six hours. When eventually the unseen spirit is torn from the victim, rice is showered on now cured native as a final act.

The native doctor's work continues - bringing rain, preventing the crop failure, driving out devils - despite the tremendous advancement of clinics and medical units in the country and jungle districts.
