Background: SYNOPSIS: After a period of enforced dissolute under the government of Dr. Busia, Ghana's Trades Union Congress celebrated its re-constitution at a rally in Accra last Saturday addressed by Colonel Acheampong, Ghana's Head of State and Chairman of the ruling National Redemption Council.
Colonel Acheampong told unionists his government was determined to he the constant guardian of the rights and privileges of workers. It was upon the toil of the workers that Ghana's economic, social and political fortunes depended. He said "The tree of greatness can only be watered by the sweat of a dedicated people."
Several other members of the National Redemption Council were present as Colonel Acheampong appealed to workers to expose all foreigners and their agents who spread anti-government rumours.
The Colonel said the rumours which suggested the government was working against workers' interests in participating in certain business schemes, were only calculated to deceive Ghanaians.
