An Israeli school bus loaded with young children was shelled this morning (Friday 22nd May) near the Lebanese border, killing 8 and injuring 21. The incident occurred when Arab commandos fired three bazooka rockets at the bus from a distance of only twenty yards (metres).
One of the first to arrive on the scene, an army doctor, has told of finding the dead blown to pieces, and the wounded children scattered everywhere.
The Israelis believe the bus was deliberately ambushed, as an army patrol had...shortly before...been allowed to pass through the area untouched. The bus passed along the same road every morning picking up school children.
The attack brought swift retaliation from Israeli troops while the injured were being evacuated to hospital...many grievously wounded. The bus was carrying children from the small town of Avivim to the regional school at Doves in Upper Galilee.
Two days ago the United Nations Security Council condemned Israel for punitive raids against a guerilla-controlled pocket in Southern Lebanon. A military spokesman in Tiberias has declined to comment on reports from Beirut that Israeli gunners shelled two Lebanese villages killing three children during their swift retaliation. Israel recently warned the Lebanon that attacks would not go unpunished.
