Background: The annual South Vietnam national cycle race - the "Republic Tour"-was recently filmed by VISNEWS. Film shows this year's 128 competitors during the ninth stage near Binh Duong and during the final leg which took them to Saigon June 21.
The gruelling race over a distance of 1,800 miles in 21 stages has become a rational affair. Riders started late in May from Ben-Hai near the 17th parallel, the Republic's border with Communist North Vietnam.
Along the coastal strip the cyclists pushed their way down south through hills valleys and plains, touching 39 cities. Stamina was more important than speed.
This years' winner, Ngo Thanh Liem, received flowers, handshakes and cheers...but no victory kisses.
