  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat called on Western powers to give guarantees to insure a permanent peace in the Middle East, when speaking to newsmen in Cairo on Sunday (25 April).

The newsmen were accompanying the Danish Prime Minister, Anker Joerganson, on his visit to Egypt.

President Sadat said that in his opinion, a Palestinian state should be established on the West Bank of the River Jordan and the Gaza Strip, with a corridor between the two locations.

He said the 27 years of belligerence between the Arabs and the Israelis could be ended if both sides were to receive guarantees from the Security Council or the big Western powers.

Political guarantees had been received from some countries - including West Germany, France and Britain. the president said. He added that others were welcome to take their share of the responsibilities.

Earlier, President Sadat spoke to newsmen about the recently signed Chinese-Egyptian military protocol. Under this agreement, China will provide Egypt with spare parts for its Soviet-built arms, and will also overhaul military equipment.

Egypt ended its friendship treaty with the Soviet Union in March this year because of alleged Soviet failure to supply Egypt with parts for its arms.

This film is serviced with part of President Sadat's news conference. A transcript appears below.

It is that a Palestinian state would take place in the Western Bank of Jordan and in the Gaza Strip with a corridor between them. I think this will be the key to a permanent peace and to the solution that we are after. If this can be achieved, I think after 27 years of belligerence between the Arabs and the Israelis, up to this moment - I think we can end this state of belligerence officially. And guarantees either from the, let us say, the Security Council, the big powers, whatever powers can give this guarantee to the Israelis and to the Arabs at the same time. In Germany when I had my talks with Chancellor Schmidt, he is ready to join in the guarantees, but in the political aspect of the guarantees, not the military because there may come an issue that certain contingent to be of the borders between the Arabs and the Israelis. And so he said well, in the political guarantees we are quite ready to take our share. As you may remember, I had suggested last year that Britain and France should take their part in the guarantees. They have agreed. This year and last February in the Soviet Congress in Moscow, Brezhnev declares that he agrees that France and Britain should take their share in the solution, Well, now I have added Germany and any other Western countries that want to take their responsibilities or take their share in these responsibilities are welcome".
