  • Description

Kenya's President Jomo Kenyatta on Wednesday (29 September) opened the annual Nairobi International Show....this year with the theme of Partnership for prosperity.

SYNOPSIS: The President was welcomed into the show arena by a fanfare of trumpets.

President Kenyatta told the crowd at the official opening that the show was the annual yardstick with which Kenya measured its continuous success with agricultural produce and industry. He said the showground was the venue where farmers came to see and learn improved farming methods and where they could measure their own output against the highest quality livestock and crops. The show began in 1902, but with expansion over the years, it was decided to add the word International to its title this year.

The official start to the show was also used as an occasion for displaying the Kenyan armed forces. As well as the military displays at the opening ceremonies, the Kenyan Army, Air Force, Navy and police operated individual exhibits for the length of the five-day show. In his opening speech, the president said the practice of breaking up large farms into small holdings must be stopped immediately in the interests of higher production. He also outlined several farming methods which had to be changed to protect the environment and wildlife.

The highlight of the opening ceremony was a fly past by Air Force planes including Strike-master jets. Other military activities in the main arena included a daily beating of the retreat by various armed forces units, demonstrations of military tactics and physical training displays.

Despite rising costs, the show has expanded yearly. This time, there were 35 new exhibitors at Jamhuri Park.

The British pavilion is one f twelve at the show operated by foreign government. Inside these, more than 150 individual companies displayed their goods.

The show is primarily for agricultural produce...it started lie as the East African Agricultural and Horticultural Society Show. But industrial exhibits, particularly those related to agriculture, are encouraged by the organisers, as are displays considered to be socially beneficial.

A newcomer this year was Nigeria. Inside their pavilion, a deep sea diver demonstrated his craft to an appreciative crowd of children. It was part of a harbours display.

The foreign participants have been encouraged to interpret the co-operation theme in their displays and a special award was to have been made for the exhibitor who best interprets the theme.

Uganda's Minister for Agriculture, Mr. J.J. Nyagah visited on the day of the official opening. He saw a parade of cattle reduced from last year's level as the result of foot and mouth disease in several of the main cattle area. Animals exhibited were allowed only from areas declared completely free of the disease.
