CU Waldheim speaks
This coverage of Secretary-General Waldheim's statement is from United Nation TV. A text of Mr Waldheim's comments follows:
WALDHEIM: "Look at the unhealed and intolerable wounds which subsist: the war in South East Asia, the crisis in the Middles East, Cyprus, Korea and the situation in Southern Africa, the poor getting poorer and the rich richer. Well I agree with you! It is intolerable and all those who share responsibility in this state of affairs should pause for a moment on this day and search their conscience. The world just cannot be at rest until the last conflict has been solved and major injustices corrected. We must remember, on this day especially, that the United Nations is not an ordinary institution. It represents the best hopes of all mankind. World peace and human survival will depend on the way in which the United Nations develops. Let me state in all frankness that the support of Governments alone will not be sufficient. What we also need is the support of the people all over the world. On this day I appeal to you to help and to support the United Nations in its work. If we are united in our will to succeed, we can and will build a better world."
