  • Description

MILITARY POLICE USED TEAR GAS ON SUNDAY TO DISPERSE 5,000 ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATORS WHO MARCHED ON THE FORT DIX MILITARY BASE IN NEW JERSEY, U.S.A.

OVER 800 POLICEMEN, WEARING GAS MASKS AND CARRYING RIFLES WITH BAYONETS, HERDED THE DEMONSTRATORS OFF THE BASE AFTER THEY HAD PENETRATED ABOUT FOUR HUNDRED YARDS (METRES) ON TO AN OPEN FIELD.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SPONSORED BY THE 'COMMITTEE TO FREE THE FORT DIX 38'. ORGANISERS CLAIMED THAT MILITARY AUTHORITIES HAD DETAINED THIRTY-EIGHT SOLDIERS WHO TOOK PART IN A RIOT AT THE BASE MILITARY PRISON ON JUNE 5TH. THE ARMY SAID THIRTY-FIVE MEN WERE ARRESTED AND THAT THE CHARGES AGAINST TWENTY HAVE BEEN DROPPED.

MARCHING EIGHT ABREAST IN A PROCESSION WHICH STRETCHED A QUARTER OF A MILE, THE DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO REACH THE PRISON COMPOUND.

MILITARY POLICE SPRAYED TEAR GAS DIRECTLY INTO THEIR RANKS. AS THEY RETREATED, TROOPS WITH BAYONETS FORCED THE DEMONSTRATORS BACK ONTO THE ROAD ALONGSIDE THE BASE.

THERE WERE NO ARRESTS, AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.
