  • Description

THE NIGERIAN ARMY BATTALION WHICH TOOK OVER THE "POLICE FORCE" ROLE FROM BRITISH ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS AFTER THE TANGANYIKA ARMY MUTINY IN JANUARY STARTED TO LEAVE DAR ES SALAAM YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR HOME. PRESIDENT NYERERE TOOK THE SALUTE AT A FAREWELL PARADE AT STATE HOUSE.

THE NIGERIANS REPLACED THE BRITISH AS A RESULT OF AN EMERGENCY MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION FOR AFRICAN UNITY IN DAR ES SALAAM LAST FEBRUARY. IT WAS INTENDED THAT THEY, AFTER SIX MONTHS, WOULD BE REPLACED BY EITHER AN ALGERIAN OR AN ETHIOPIAN FORCE. IT IS BELIEVED THIS IS NO LONGER NECESSARY.

(ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1,000 RECRUITS FOR TANGANYIKA'S NEW ARMY COMPLETED A THREE-MONTH TRAINING PROGRAMME. THESE MEN, TOGETHER WITH TROOPS OF THE 2ND BATTALION, TANGANYIKA RIFLES, WILL MORE THAN MAKE UP FOR THE LOSS OF THE 1ST BATTALION, DISBANDED AFTER THE MUTINY.)
