  • Description

ON DISPLAY IN WEST BERLIN - A NEW MINIATURE SUBMARINE. SHE'S JUST 5.30 METERS (17 FEET 4 INCHES) LONG AND 1.35 METERS (4 FEET 4 INCHES) HIGH.

KNOWN AS "TIGERHAI", SHE WAS DESIGNED BY A TEAM OF SHIPBUILDING ENGINEERS AT THE BERLIN TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY FOR USE IN BOTH UNDERWATER RESEARCH AND UNDERWATER SPORT.

THE 1550-KILOGRAM (3,417-LB) MINI U-BOAT HAS BEEN UNDERGOING TRIALS AT THE UNIVERSITY'S WATER TANK - 250 YARDS (230 METERS) LONG AND EUROPE'S BIGGEST.

A BIG ADVANTAGE OF THE TWO-MAN VESSEL IS THAT THE OCCUPANTS ENJOY NORMAL ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS - EVEN UNDERWATER WITHOUT BEING HAMPERED BY EXTRA OXYGEN CYLINDERS.

HER THREE-BLADE PROPELLER IS MADE OF BRONZE, AND DRIVES THREE FORWARD GEARS AND ONE REVERSE. MINIMUM CRUISING SPEED ON THE SURFACE IS 10 KMS (6.2 MILES) AND HOUR AND 7 KMS (4.35 MILES) AN HOUR SUBMERGED.

BECAUSE OF COMPRESSION ON DANGERS, THE SUBMARINE IS LIMITED TO A DIVING DEPTH OF 35 METER (114 FEET). FULLY MANNED, SHE CAN STAY UNDERWATER FOR UP TO 6 1/2 HOURS.

AND THE COST? ABOUT 25,000 D-MARKS, WHICH IS THREE TIMES LESS THAN AMERICA'S CHEAPEST MINI-SUB.
