• Short Summary

    U. S. Marine Corps pilots and crew members stationed at the Marine Air Base, Chu?

  • Description

    U. S. Marine Corps pilots and crew members stationed at the Marine Air Base, Chu Lai, South Vietnam, are receiving an intensive indoctrination course in the technique of rappelling.

Primary mission of the instructions is to teach pilots and crew members how to get to the ground in the event they are forced to parachute from their aircraft and become entangled in the high tree canopy of the jungles of Vietnam.

Each flight suit has a length of nylon cord in the leg pocket capable of supporting up to a thousand pounds. A pilot snagged in tall trees ties one end of the cord to his entangled parachute, runs it through the rings of his parachute harness and rappel to the ground. This method of rappelling permits the downed pilot to safely lower himself to the ground, and minimizes the hazards of parachuting into jungle country.
