Background: A Russian trade fair opened Nov. 4 in colombo by USSR Foreign Trade Deputy Minister P.N.Koumykin ranges in its exhibits from models of sputniks - not for sale - to fabrics for the home. The fair is one of the first of its kind outside the Soviet Union and under lines the USSR Government's policy of sales development in Asian countries.
The sputniks - and a Lenin status - dominate the entrance to the fair. Among the 2000 guests on opening day were Ministers, government officials and businessmen. For neutral Ceylon - a historic day with a large complement of Russian salesmen on its soil for the first time in history.
The present Government's Policy of neutrality made it possible for the Soviet Union to organize and an Exhibition in Ceylon for the first time, in its history. Replica's the Sputnik, Luniks 1 and 2, 8 Giant size statue of Lenin, agricultural and industrial machinery, textiles silver ware, TV sets etc were on display. Large panels of pictures and unique layout, made the exhibition one of the most attractive to be ever held in Ceylon. The Exhibition was declared open by the Hon. Mr. P.N.Koumykin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade of the U.S.S.S.R. Prominent among the Ceylon Parliamentarians at this Exhibition was the leader of the Opposition, Dr. N.M.Perera. The Minister for Labour, Mr. T.B.Illangaratna and the Minister for Transport, Mr.Henry Abeywickrama were also present.
