  • Description

SINCE 1961 THE PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES IN ANGOLA HAVE BEEN SENDING SELECTED NUMBERS OF CAPTURED AFRICAN INSURGENTS TO A SPECIAL DETENTION AND REHABILITATION FARM. VISNEWS HAS SECURED A RARE FILM OF THE FARM, WHERE THE DETAINEES ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE THEIR FAMILIES WITH THEM, SOME 100 MILES NORTH OF MOCAMEDES, AT ST. NICOLAU.

THE ST. NICOLAU FARM HAD BEEN ABANDONED FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS BEFORE THE PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES TOOK IT OVER. AT PRESENT THERE ARE SOME 300 DETAINEES IN THE CAMP. THOSE WHO HAVE TRADES ARE ALLOWED TO PURSUE THEM, WHILE OTHERS ARE TAUGHT TRADES, SUCH AS FARMING, CARPENTRY, AND SHOEMAKING.

AFTER SIX MONTHS AT THE CAMP, THE DETAINEES' FAMILIES ARE ALLOWED TO JOIN THEM. ALL FOOD, CLOTHING AND MEDICAL AID IS PROVIDED FREE TO BOTH DETAINEES AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE DETAINEES ARE KEPT AT THE FARM FOR PERIODS RANGING FROM TWO TO FIVE YEARS. SOME HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO REMAIN, AT THEIR OWN REQUEST.

THE FARM PRODUCES A VARIETY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS, ABOUT 50 PER CENT OF WHICH ARE SOLD, AND A PORTION OF THE MONEY OBTAINED IS GIVEN TO EACH DETAINEE AS HE IS RELEASED FROM THE CAMP. THE FARM'S PRODUCTION LAST YEAR INCLUDED 50 TONS OF BEANS, 35 TONS OF PEANUTS, 80 TONS OF MAIZE, AND 150 TONS OF BANANAS.

AFTER THEIR RELEASE, MOST OF THE DETAINEES ARE REPATRIATED TO THEIR OWN VILLAGES.
