    THE MARATHON WAS RUN OVER A COURSE FROM AZGOITIA TO ZARAUZ - A POPULAR SEASIDE HOLIDAY RESORT NEAR SAN SEBASTIAN, ON THE ATLANTIC COAST.

    AFTERWARDS BIKILA SAID HE WAS SATISFIED WITH THE RESULT, BUT WHAT HE HAD DECIDED NOT TO TRY FOR A WORLD'S BEST MARATHON TIME BECAUSE OF THE HUMIDITY AND VARYING CONDITIONS OF THE ROADS, SOME OF WHICH WERE PAVED AND OTHERS MERELY DIRT TRACKS.

    CARLOS PEREZ, SPAIN'S MARATHON CHAMPION, FINISHED IN SECOND PLACE, TAKING PART IN THE EVENT WERE COMPETITORS FROM BELGIUM, NORWAY, SWEDEN AND IRELAND.
