  • Description

THE BODIES OF ALL 21 MINERS KILLED BY A GAS EXPLOSION IN THE AVION MINE AT ARRAS WERE RECOVERED LATE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) NIGHT. THEY LAY ALL NIGHT IN AN IMPROVISED MORTUARY CHAPEL AT THE PITHEAD, AND TODAY WERE TAKEN TO THEIR HOMES. THE FUNERAL IS EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY.

YESTERDAY GENERAL DE GAULLE MADE A PERSONAL GIFT OF 30,000 FRANCE TO THE FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS.

THE COMMUNIST-LED C.G.T. MINERS' UNION IN PARIS HAS ANNOUNCED ITS DETERMINATION "TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THIS DISASTER AND ESTABLISH RESPONSIBILITIES." AND TODAY MINERS AT THE AVION PIT DECIDED NOT TO RESUME WORK IN SPITE OF A MANAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WORK WOULD GO AHEAD AS USUAL.

AT A MEETING THIS MORNING, UNION OFFICIALS CALLED FOR BETTER SAFETY MEASURES IN THE MINE AND ASKED THE MEN NOT TO RESUME WORK WHILE THE BODIES OF THEIR COLLEAGUES WERE STILL ON THE SITE.

THE AVION MINE IS ONE OF THE MOST MODERN IN THE AREA AND IS FITTED WITH METHANE GAS DETECTORS. THESE INDICATED LAST NIGHT THERE WAS NO LONGER ANY DANGER DOWN THE PIT.
