AMONG THE ENTRANTS WERE BRITAIN'S PRINCE MICHAEL,INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALLER JIMMY GRAVES AND TOP RALLY STARS TIME MAKINEN AND PADDY HOPKIRK.

    THE FIRST STARTER WAS FLAGGED AWAY BY ENGLAND'S SOCCER TEAM MANAGER SIR ALF RASMEY--HIMSELF SHORTLY BOUND FOR MEXICO TO MASTERMIND THE ENGLAND BID TO RETAIN THE WORLD CUP.

    AFTER SETTING OUT FROM LONDON'S WEMBLEY STADIUM--SCENE OF THE 1966 WORLD CUP FINAL--THE RALLY ENTRANTS FACE SOME OF THE MOST GRUELLING MOUNTAIN ROADS INN EUROPE AND SOUTH AMERICA BEFORE FINISHING ON MAY 27 IN THE AZTEC STADIUM, MEXICO CITY, WHERE THIS YEAR'S WORLD CUP WILL BE CONTESTED.

    TODAY'S FIRST STAGE OF THE RALLY WILL BE AMONG THE EASIEST. DRIVERS HAD A COMPARATIVELY SIMPLE RUN DOWN TO ENGLAND'S SOUTH COAST PORT OF DOVER TO EMBARK FOR FRANCE. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF ANY EARLY WITHDRAWALS.

    THE DRIVERS WILL BE COMPETING FOR PRIZE MONEY OF MORE THAN GBP37,000 STERLING PUT UP BY A BRITISH DAILY NEWSPAPER. FIVE MAJOR INTERNATIONAL CAR MANUFACTURERS HAVE ENTERED WORKS TEAMS, INCLUDING ONE FROM THE SOVIET UNION.
