  • Description

Journalists, in an armoured car flying a white flag, went to the scene of the recent troubles between French and Tunisian forces at Remada. They toured the village, that had been the centre of a battle just under a week ago, and spoke to the French garrison COMMANDER at Remada Fort, Col. Mollot.

During this battle, and attack was made on French troops patrolling the area. In retaliating the French warned the 600 inhabitants of the village to move out. When the evacuation seemed complete they attacked the Tunisian troops positioned in the houses. Under the impression that gunfire was coming from the school building, the French soldiers machine-gunned and bombed the place, with grenades. Afterwards the headmaster, his wife and children were found dead inside one of the rooms.

Tunisia, everyready to bring the sympathy of other nations to her cause, has accused the French of wanton reprisals against civilians and of murdering the school water and his family.

The school in question is about 200 yards from the main defences of the French base, which in recent weeks has been subjected to continuous pressure by both regular and irregular Tunisian forces. French patrols on the roads leading from Remada have been forced to turn back to their base or forced into exchanging fire with the Tunisian.
