  • Description

Trajan's Column is at once a sublime expression of Roman Art and of the dominating force of the conquerors of the World. It is towering into the air nearly a hundred feet high. Around the shaft spirally in 23 tiers are some 25.000 figures done in relief. They represent the victories of the emperor Trajan (A.D.98-117), under whom the empire reached its greatest extent.

Under this column, in a golden urn, the ashes of the Emperor were buried. On the summit there was originally a colossal bronze statue of him, which Pope Sixtus V (1521-1590) replaced with figure of St. Peter
