    A HUGE FIRE THAT HAS BEEN BLAZING AT A PETROLEUM REFINERY IN SPAIN HAS ALREADY CAUSED AT LEAST FIVE DEATHS AND GBP9 MILLION STERLING WORTH OF DAMAGE.

    THE FIRE IS AT THE REPESA COMPANY'S ESCOMBRERAS REFINERY NEAR CARTAGENA, SOUTH EAST SPAIN.

    THE REFINERY, WHICH WAS OPENED IN 1950, HAS A CAPACITY OF 7 MILLION METRIC TONS A YEAR. THE FIRE BEGAN WITH AN EXPLOSION IN ONE OF THE TANKS ON OCTOBER 1. FLAMES ROARED FROM THE TANK, WHICH CONTAINED PURE GASOLINE, AND SET EIGHT OTHER TANKS ABLAZE. ANOTHER EIGHT ARE IN DANGER OF CATCHING FIRE BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE HEAT.

    SMOKE FROM THE BLAZE CAN BE SEEN FOR 30 MILES (48 KM) AS A 500 STRONG TEAM OF SOLDIERS AND FIREMEN BATTLE THE BLAZE. FIREMEN HAVE BEEN SHIPPED INTO THE DANGER AREA FORM ALL OVER SPAIN AND DOUSING OPERATIONS ARE BING CARRIED OUT BY TWO 500-STRONG TEAMS.

    BECAUSE OF THE DANGER FORM EXPLODING TANKS 5,000 INHABITANTS OF A NEARBY VILLAGE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED FROM THEIR HOMES. IT IS LIKELY TO BE SEVERAL DAYS YET BEFORE THE BLAZE IS PUT OUT.
