  • Description

RINGA, MALAGASY'S NATIONAL SPORT, SIMILAR TO ALL-IN WRESTLING, WAS FEATURED AT LAST WEEK'S JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TANANARIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME. JUDO HAS BECOME A LEADING SPORT IN THE COUNTRY, BUT THIS YEAR IT WAS DECIDED TO INCLUDE IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS A DEMONSTRATION OF RINGA, WHICH USUALLY TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE AT MORE LOCAL EVENTS.

THERE ARE NOW 1,600 PEOPLE IN MADAGASCAR WHO HOLD JUDO LICENCES, AND EVERY YEAR, IN THE SECOND FORTNIGHT IN DECEMBER, THE CREAM OF THE COUNTRY'S JUDO CLUBS MEET IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. TWELVE CLUBS WERE REPRESENTED IN THIS YEAR'S CONTEST, FIVE OF THEM FROM THE CAPITAL, TANANARIVE, ITSELF.

AFTER THE CONTESTS, THE RINGA FIGHTERS MOVED INTO THE ARENA FOR THE TRADITIONAL SPEAR DANCING BEFORE MOVING OUT INTO THE OPEN AIR FOR THEIR EXHIBITION.

RINGA IS A FORM OF ALL-IN WRESTLING, WITH NO HOLDS BARRED EXCEPT PUNCHING AND ARM-TWISTING. AS DRUMMERS BEAT OUT THE RHYTHM AND SINGERS CHANT IN TIME TO THE CONTESTANT'S MOVEMENTS, THE FIGHTERS STRUGGLE TO GET THEIR OPPONENT'S SHOULDERS ON THE GROUND - AND SO WIN THE CONTEST.

IN CASE OF A DRAWN CONTEST, BOTH MEN ARE DECLARED WINNERS, THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME BEING THAT IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO AVOID DEFEAT THAN TO WIN OUTRIGHT.
