  • Description

Despite last minute Israeli hostility, Syrian and Israeli representatives signed the Agreement for the disengagement of their forces along the Golan Heights in Geneva on Friday (31 May).

The day before, there had been angry scenes involving Israeli Cabinet ministers, M.p.s, and the public gallery at the Knesset (parliament) in Jerusalem, when the retiring Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir, presented the terms of the Agreement. Mrs. Meir had to shout to make herself heard above the heckling from Opposition members, spearheaded by Opposition leader Manahem Begin, who later gave a statement to newsmen.

There were cries of "Don't sign it!" and "the agreement is a catastrophe for the nation". The Knesset eventually voted to accept the Agreement by 76 votes to 36 with six abstentions.

Mr. Menahem Begin, the Likud leader, who formerly led the Irgun terrorists against the British, after the vote repeated his objections to newsmen at a news conference.
