  • Description

Nigeria celebrated its twelfth anniversary of independence with four days of festivities, ending with a large and colourful parade on Monday (2 October), followed by a private government reception.

The four-day celebrations began with special prayers in all mosques on Friday (29 September), which were followed by similar observances in all churches on Sunday (1 October). This was the second peaceful anniversary after the civil war which nearly tore the country apart.

In an anniversary radio broadcast to the nation, General Yakubu Gowon, head of the Federal Military Government and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria's armed forces, called for an end to inter-African conflicts and urged greater devotion to the cause of decolonisation and development.

"I appeal to all our African brothers to bury the hatchet", he said. General Gowon added: "Africa will not count in the councils of the world unless we realise the objectives of our agreed joint endeavours; unless our policies towards one another are based on a relationship of equality, friendship and mutual trust".

General Gowon reviewed Nigeria's achievements and efforts in the past year, noting progress in all sectors of the economy except agriculture. He said this should be remedied by new policies, including credit for farmers, establishing fair prices for agricultural produce, large-scale farm projects both at national and state level, and mechanisation.

Roads, communication and transport would be improved and expanded to stimulated economic growth; 21,000 houses would be built in Lagos and state capitals to ease the acute housing shortage, and the government also planned to establish a compulsory national youth service corps, which would initially be composed of university graduates who would serve the nation for a short time before pursuing their careers.
