  • Description

THE HONGKONG HARBOUR AND OTHER FAMILIAR SIGHTS, WILL BE MISSED BY THE CHILDREN OF MISS MILDRED DIBDEN'S HOME AT SHANTIN. THE HOME IS TO MOVE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM SHORTLY. AND WITH IT, 21 CHINESE GIRLS -- THE LAST OF 300 ABANDONED INFANTS WHICH MISS DIBDEN HAS BROUGHT UP AND CARED FOR DURING THE PAST 30 YEARS.

THE HOME FORMERLY AN OLD POLICE STATION. IT WAS GIVEN TO MISS DIBDEN SOON AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR WHEN SHE RETURNED FROM REHABILITION.

MISS DIBDEN, A MISSIONARY, CAME OUT TO HONGKONG IN 1934. SINCE THEN, SHE HAD DEDICATED HER LIFE TO THE CARE OF HONGKONG'S HOMELESS AND UNWANTED INFANTS. SOME WERE FOUND HANGING IN BASKETS ONTREES TO DIE OF EXPOSURE. IN THE EARLY STAGES, SHE HAD PUSHED A PRAM TO BEG FOR RICE FOR HER CHILDREN.

FROM A WINDOW, MISS DIBDEN OFTEN WATCHES HER CHILDREN AT PLAY. THEY ARE EIGHTER HAVING A WHALE OF A TYPE AT THE SWINGS OR IN THE SWIMMING POOL.--- BUILT WITH DONATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC AND CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS.

EDUCATIONS FOR THE CHILDREN HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VITAL PROBLEM. THEY ARE WORKING HARD FOR NECESSARY LEVELS IN ENGLISH AND OTHER SUBJECTS. ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN ENGLAND FOR THE NECESSARY SCHOOLING FOR EACH CHILD. THE OLDER ONES WILL BE TRAINED AS NURSES OR TEACHERS SO THAT ONE DAY, THEY WILL RETURN TO HONGKONG TO WORK FOR THE GOOD OF THEIR OWN PEOPLE.

THE TRANSFER TO ENGLAND HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE FOLLOWING MISS DIBDEN'S VISIT TO LONDON SOMETIME AGO AND HER MEETING WITH THE BRITISH UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE.

THE DOME IN ENGLAND WILL BEAR THE NAME "THE SHATIN CHILDREN'S HOME." SITUATED AT SOUTHSEA ON THE SOUTH COAST OF ENGLAND, NEAR PORTSMOUTH, THE HOME WAS ACQUIRED IN A VERY SHORT SPACE OF TIME -- THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY AND EXTENSIVE HELP FROM MISS DIBDENS' ENGLISH FRIENDS.

THE GIRLS ARE KNOWN AS THE YIP FAMILY OF HONGKONG. MISS DIBDEN ADOPTED THIS NAME SO THAT ALL HER BABIES WOULD HAVE THE SAME SURNAME AND AN ADDED SENSE OF FAMILY UNITY.

A LEADING BRITISH AIRLINES HAS KINDLY OFFERED TO PROVIDE AIR PASSAGES AT A REDUCED COST OF GBP85 FOR EACH CHILD.
