Background: At least twenty-two people were reported burnt to death in a forest fire near the popular north-eastern Spanish resort of Lloret de Mar on Tuesday (7 August). Many of the dead were children. The President of the Provincial Parliament Mr. Vidal told Spanish radio he believed the fire was almost certainly started intentionally.

SYNOPSIS: Early reports put the death toll at twenty-two, including six children. Most of the bodies recovered were so charred that they not at first be identified, and it was not possible for the authorities to say whether foreign tourists were among those who perished.

Some of the victims were found huddled together in a dry river bed where they had apparently sought refuge. Others had been holidaying in a large marquee.

Many died when they were trapped in holiday bungalows or as they walked in the woods. Nearby Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava is among the most popular holiday resorts in the region.

The fire started shortly before midday in three separate blazes and as troops and fire men continued fighting it into the night, authorities were quoted saying they believed the fires were almost certainly started intentionally.
