  • Description

Austrian motor racing star Niki Lauda lengthened his lead in the World Drivers' Championships on Sunday (8 June) by winning the Swedish Formula One Grand Prix at Anderstrop.

The victory pushed Lauda's total of Championship points to 32...increasing his lead to 10 points over Emerson Fittipaldi of Argentina.

Starting in fifth place, Lauda made it a tactical race...leaving his bid for the leadership and the title until the last ten laps. The early stages of the 80-lap race were led by veteran Italian driver Vittorio Brambilla who--after several years of indifferent Grand Prix performances--had turned in the best practice times to give him pole position in Sunday's race.

But Brambilla could not hold on to the lead, and after seventeen laps, Argentinian Carlos Reutemann came through to take first position.

Reutemann looked headed for victory, and held off 26-year-old Lauda's challenge until--in a dramatic spurt ten laps from home -- the Austrian powered his Ferrari into the lead. His victory was ensured when he increased his average lap speed to 161,66 kilometres (100.2 miles) per hour for the 321.48 kilometre (199.76 mile) race...just 0.15 kilometres (0.1 miles) per hour faster than Reutemann who came in second.

Lauda's Ferrari team-mate, Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, breezed in to an easy third ahead of U.S. driver Mario Andretti in a Parnelli.
