  • Description

Alabama Governor George Wallace lay partially paralysed in hospital on Tuesday (16 May), after a team of doctors fought for his life all night. Mr Wallace was shot while mingling with a joking, warm-hearted crowd at a Democratic presidential primary election campaign in a shopping centre at Laurel, Maryland.

The 52-year-old Governor seemed to be making a strong recovery, and doctors said he could go home in four or five days -- but they were not sure if the paralysis from the lower hips down would be permanent.

The shooting came as Wallace finished a speech to a crowd of about 800, and began shaking hands with those nearest the podium. The gunman approached from the right and fired five shots. Bedlam broke out as the Governor slumped to the ground. Doctors said Mr Wallace was hit four or five times. Three other people were also wounded in the shooting.

A 21-year-old blonde man, Arthur Bremmer, is alleged to have fired the .38-calibre pistol point-blank range into the Governor's stomach. Bremmer is being held in Baltimore on bail of 200,000 dollars. He has been charged with assaulting an election candidate and a secret service agent. The state of Maryland said it would level against Bremmer a charge of four counts of assault with intent to murder.

President Nixon has ordered secret service agents to protect major and minor presidential candidates and non-candidate Senator Edward Kennedy.

Mr Wallace's campaign manager said the Governor's presidential campaign would continue. It was not known how the assassination attempt might affect the voters in the two primary elections today(16 May) in Maryland and Michigan. In both, Mr Wallace was opposed by Senators Hubert Humphrey and George McGovern.

SYNOPSIS: Governor George Wallace of Alabama was winding up his Maryland Democratic presidential primary campaign at a shopping centre in Laurel on Monday. His speech had been well received by the friendly crowd and he decided to take off his coat and mingle with the people.

Suddenly, a man forced his way to the front of the crowd and fired five shots point-blank into the Governor's stomach. The crowd grabbed a blonds man wearing sunglasses, who is alleged to have fired the shots. Wallace lay wounded as aides tried to give him medical assistance.

The suspect, twenty-one-year-old Arthur Bremmer, was pummelled before police could get to him. He was taken before a Baltimore magistrate and charged by the Federal government with assaulting an election candidate and a secret service agent - one of three other people wounded during the shooting.

Their was a delay in the arrival of the ambulance due to the confusion at the scene. Wallace's thirty-two-year-old wife, Cornelia, said that Wallace was conscious the whole time, until he was put under an anaesthetic at a nearby hospital.

Earlier in the day, Wallace addressed a crowd in Wheaton. Bodyguards fended off missiles hurled at the Alabama Governor, who has run into similar incidents during the campaign for the Maryland presidential primary. The Maryland primary and the Michigan primary are crucial to Wallace in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination against Senators Hubert Humphrey and George McGovern. The returns from those states are not yet complete, and it is not known how the shooting incident will affect the vote.

Senator Humphrey had been campaigning in Maryland and rushed to the Laurel hospital to get first-hand word on Wallace's condition. Doctors say that the fifty-two-year-old Governor is making a strong recovery, but were not sure if the paralysis from the lower hips down would be permanent.
