Background: THE U.S.S.R. ON TUESDAY LAUNCHED A MASSIVE TRADE DRIVE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA, WITH A THREE-WEEK TRADE AND INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION OPENED IN KUALA LUMPUR, THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL. IT'S THE BIGGEST SOVIET TRADE SHOW EVER HELD IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA AND IS AIMED AT ESTABLISHING A COMMERCIAL FOOTHOLD IN THE REGION.

SIXTY TRADE OFFICIALS AND TECHNICIANS WERE FLOWN OUT FROM MOSCOW SPECIALLY FOR THE THREE-WEEK SHOW AND BUSINESSMEN FROM MANY ASIAN COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN INVITED ALONG.

AT THE OPENING CEREMONY, THE SOVIET DEPUTY MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE, MR. M.R. KUZMIN, SAID THE SOVIET UNION WANTED TO EXPORT GOODS, NOT POLITICS. "TRADE AND ECONOMIC RELATIONS OF THE SOVIET UNION WITH ALL NATIONS", HE SAID, "ARE BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF MUTUAL BENEFIT, RESPECT OF SOVEREIGNTY AND NON-INTERFERENCE IN EACH OTHER'S AFFAIRS."
OPENING THE EXHIBITION, THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER TUN ABDUL RAZAK, SAID MALAYSIA RELIED ON PEACE BEING MAINTAINED IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA WITH THE HELP OF THE MAJOR POWERS AS WELL AS OTHER COUNTRIES WITH ECONOMIC INTERESTS IN THE REGION.

ALTHOUGH THE EXHIBITION HAS PLENTY OF CONSUMER GOODS, THE EMPHASIS IS ON MACHINE TOOLS AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY. FARM AND ROAD-BUILDING EQUIPMENT IS BEING SOLD UP TO FIFTY PER CENT CHEAPER THAN THE SAME WESTERN AND JAPANESE PRODUCTS. HOWEVER, TRADE OFFICIALS FROM THESE COUNTRIES WERE SCEPTICAL WHETHER THE SOVIET UNION COULD MATCH ITS CUT PRICES WITH EFFICIENT AFTER-SALES SERVICE.
