  • Description

Koichi Wajima, a Japanese truck driver who began boxing only three years ago, scored a stunning upset in Tokyo on Sunday (31 October) when he beat Carmelo Bossi of Italy on a split points decision to take the World Junior Middleweight title.

The 28-year-old Japanese boxer carried the fight to his more experienced opponent from the very start with a remarkable display of unorthodox boxing. Bossi was constantly forced into clinches as his Japanese challenger ducked and weaved in from every possible angle.

After the last round, referee Harold Vallan of New York was decider and gave the verdict to Wajima by 68 points to 67.
