A daily diet which includes a pound of meat, milk butter and honey - and a weekly walk of 17 miles. This sounds like the health programme of a sportsman, but is in fact the routine of an old man of Foomen, Iran, reputed to be 140 years old. Cameramen who went to Foomen, to film a day in the life of Shirsavar, had difficulty in persuading his sons, both in their 50's, to let him come out of the house. Eventually the head of the village brought out the man, bearded and wearing the native dress.
Each day, Shirsavar takes a walk before breakfast and once a week walks from the village to Rashat: distance 27 kilos. Sometimes he rides on horseback or by camel to Meshed, on the eastern boundary of the country.
He has never travelled by car and calls it a "giant horse". After breakfasting, he makes his way to the Mosque, standing head and shoulders above the old people worshipping there. Shirsavar is very much a family man and spends hours playing with his descendants and visiting friends.
When he was young, Shirsavar was a farmer, the bought a shop and became the local butcher. He began smoking when he retired, only two years ago, and attributes his long life and health to exercise and good eating.
His family numbers 30, with three sons and three daughters, and Shirsavar intends to live to see the day his favorite great granddaughter is married.
