Background: THE TITAN 30, THE MOST POWERFUL ROCKET THE US HAS DEVELOPED WAS DUE TO BE LAUNCHED TODAY FOR ITS NINTH FLIGHT -- THIS TIME WITH SIX SATELLITES ABOARD.
IN ALL, THE TRIPLE-BARRELLED ROCKET, WHICH STANDS 127 FEET HIGH, WAS EQUIPPED TO CARRY A PAY LOAD OF HALF A TON.
ONE OF THE SATELLITES, CODE-NAMED DODGE, WAS TO CARRY OUT A DEFENCE DEPARTMENT GRAVITY TEST. AMONG OTHER THINGS, ITS TELEVISION CAMERAS WERE SET TO SEND BACK PICTURES OF THE EARTH TAKEN FROM SPACE. THREE OF THE OTHER SATELLITES WERE TO AUGMENT THE 15 COMMUNICATIONS VEHICLES ALREADY IN ORBIT.
ALL SIX SATELLITES WERE TO BE PLACED IN THE NEAR-SYNCHRONOUS CORRIDOR -- AT A HEIGHT AT WHICH THEY APPEAR TO LIE OVER THE SAME POINT ON EARTH.
