SYNOPSIS: Defending champion Jack Nicklaus of the United States drives off on the fourth hole at Southport near Liverpool during the opening round of the 1971 British Open Golf Championship. It's the 100th British Open. Nicklaus began well today going four under par at the 15th. But the last two holes prove disastrous for the American and he finished the day two strokes behind the leaders on 71.

Britain's Tony Jacklin, who won the little in 1969 was on target all day, though he had trouble with his putting on some of the early holes.

In typical style, Lee Trevino of the United States finished the day in gallery pleasing style with birdie fours on the last two holes....though he too had early trouble on the greens. Trevino hopes to complete a unique treble. He's holder of the United States and Canadian Opens....and wants to add the British event to his bag for 1971. But he'll have to face strong competition from people like Jacklin who found his putting touch on the back nine to finish the day joint leader on 69......four under par.
