Background: The High Court of the Democratic Republic of the Congo sitting in Kinshasa, sentenced former rebel army general Nicolas Olenga and four others to ten years imprisonment on Tuesday (24 August). They were found guilty of plotting to kill President Mobutu or to overthrow the regime, failing to denounce the plot, and of subversive propaganda.

The court found that Olenga knew about the movement of January 17, which was to be transformed into a national liberation front. This was one of three organisations alleged to have been linked with the People's Republic of the Congo. It was for these alleged links that the Congo-Brazzaville Charge d' Affaires was declared persona non trata during the trial and ordered to leave Kinshasa.
