Background: THE ITALIAN TEAM WON THE NATIONS CUP, THE MAIN EVENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW HELD IN ROME YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). EIGHT NATIONS WERE REPRESENTED IN THE TEAM COMPETITION. THEY WERE: SWITZERLAND, POLAND, ITALY, FRANCE, TURKEY, PORTUGAL, GERMANY AND SPAIN.

THE TEAMS DREW FROM A BALLOT TO DECIDE THE ORDER OF JUMPING. FINAL POSITIONS WERE JUDGED BY THE NUMBER OF FAULTS EACH TEAM HAD AND THE TIME TAKEN TO COMPLETE THE TRICKY COURSE.

THE WINNING ITALIAN TEAM OF CAPTAIN RAIMONDO D'INZEO, RIDING POSILLIPO, HIS BROTHER MAJOR PIERO, ON RAHIN, GRAZIANO MANCINELLI ON TURVEY, AND LIEUTENANT STEFANO ANGIONI RIDING CANIO, HAD 16 FAULTS.

THE SWISS TEAM SHARED SECOND PLACE WITH PORTUGAL WITH 32 AND A HALF FAULTS EACH.

GERMANY WAS FOURTH WITH 48 FAULTS FOLLOWED BY FRANCE WITH 481/4 FAULTS AND SPAIN WITH 94.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS YEAR SERVED AS A FINAL TUNING FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO LATER IN THE YEAR. THE NOTABLE ABSENCE OF BRITAIN, RUSSIA, IRELAND, AND ROMANIA IN THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION HAS BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO THEIR TRAINING SCHEDULE IN READINESS FOR THE OLYMPICS.
