  • Description

Final stages in completion of new cement factory. The vast rotary cooler, railed from South Africa, lies ready to be hauled into position up the steep to the kiln. The cooler is the final section of heavy machinery and weighs 35 tons, being 63 feet long and 8'2" in diameter.

In the middle of the African bush at Changalumi, about 40 miles from Blantyre, there is a limestone deposit situated at over 3000 feat above sea level.

On its precipitous slopes, a private company has built a cement factory, with each stage of manufacture of the cement clinker at a lower level to the proceeding one. The last is 1500 feet below the quarry.

The company is one of the largest industrial concerns in Nyasaland, employing some 600 African workmen and its output is expected to exceed 100,000 tons of Portland cement each year.

When completed in June this, the kiln and cooler at Changalumi, the 12 1/4 miles of private railway line which joins the main line to Blantyre, and the grinding mill at Blantyre will have cost GBP1. million. 98% of this capital was raised by private investors in Southern Rhodesia.

The private railway line was opened in 1959 by the Prime Minister of the Federation, Sir Roy Welensky, who personally undertook the driving of the locomotive.
