  • Description

PRESIDENT NIXON AND FRENCH PRESIDENT, GENERAL DE GAULLE, TODAY (SATURDAY) ENDED SIX-AND-A-HALF-HOURS OF TALKS WITH A SHOW OF WARMTH AS THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS STAGED AN ANTI-AMERICAN RALLY IN PROTEST AGAINST THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT'S VISIT TO PARIS. IT WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST DEMONSTRATIONS IN PARIS SINCE THE MAY-JUNE REVOLT LAST YEAR.

THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED AROUND THE PLACE DE LA REPUBLIQUE AS RIOT POLICE WATCHED IMPASSIVELY FROM THEIR BLACK VANS.

AS THE STUDENTS AND COMMUNIST PARTY MEMBERS PASSED THE HELMETED AND ARMED POLICE, THEY JEERED AT THEM AND THREW UP THEIR ARMS IN NAZI SALUTES.

MOST OF THE CROWD GATHERED IN THE SQUARE, TRADITIONAL GATHERING PLACE FOR LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATIONS, WERE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. AS THEY MARCHED AROUND THE SQUARE THEY CHANTED "NIXON - ASSASSIN".

THE COMMUNIST LEADERS, WHO'VE DISASSOCIATED THEMSELVES FROM STUDENT VIOLENCE, LATER CALLED ON THE CROWD TO DISPERSE. THEIR OWN FOLLOWERS OBEYED THE CALL, BUT A LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS REFUSED TO DO SO AT FIRST, SHOUTING, "TO DISPERSE IS TREASON".

RIOT POLICE LATER BLOCKED THE ENTRANCES TO THE SQUARE AND THE DEMONSTRATORS DISPERSED WITHOUT SERIOUS INCIDENT.
