  • Description

THREE THOUSAND STRIKING ITALIAN METALWORKERS PICKETED THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE FORTIETH MILAN TRADE FAIR, APR 12. THEY REPRESENTED FELLOW-WORKERS IN A NUMBER OF FIRMS PRODUCING SUCH VARIED PRODUCTS AS CARS AND BATTERY TORCHES.

THE DEMONSTRATORS BLOCKED THREE ENTRANCES TO THE FAIR GROUNDS. THEIR INTENTION WAS TO PRESENT A PETITION, CALLING FOR HIGHER WAGES, TO PRESIDENT GIOVANNI GRONCHI, WHO OFFICIALLY OPENED THE FAIR.

ABOUT 1,000 POLICEMEN - ARMED WITH CLUSS AND TEAR GAS BOMBS - KEPT THE STRIKERS UNDER CONTROL AND AWAY FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL PARTY.

FOURTEEN THOUSAND FIRMS OF EIGHT NATIONS ARE TAKING PART IN THE FAIR. FOR SEVERAL YEARS THE MILAN FAIR, BIGGEST OF THE ITALIAN TRADE FAIRS, HAS BEEN SHOWING AN INCREASING TREND TOWARDS THE EXHIBITION OF CONSUMER GOODS; AND THIS YEAR THE TENDENCY IS AGAIN NOTICEABLE.
