  • Description

Rail services will be resumed this month between Thailand and Cambodia after nine years of severed diplomatic and commercials relations. The decision came at the weekend in the tiny border town of Poipet after three days of talks between Thai and Cambodian railway officials.

The General Manager of the state Railway of Thailand. Colonel Saeng Chulacharrit, and the Cambodian Rail Director, MR. In Nhel, signed their agreement aboard a special train which took both delegations from Bangkok to Poipet.

The Cambodian delegation of 12 officials said they wanted an immediate resumption of rail services to move moods intended for export which have been stranded in Cambodia following the shutdown of port facilities at Kompong Som-formerly Sihanoukville. Many of the rail bridges between Phnom Penh and Kampong Som and between Phnom Penh and Poipet have been damaged or destroyed by Viet Cong attacks.

It's not clear when the line between Phnom Penh and Popiet will be reopened. Popiet is less than 50 miles (60 kms) from Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat ruins where Cambodian troops today (Wednesday) were attacking entrenched Viet Cong forces.

Under the new rail agreement, a Thai train will run from Bangkok to Poipet two days a week and a Cambodian train will run two days a week initially from Battambang, south-west of Siem Reap, to Aranya Prathet in Thailand. The agreement still has to be signed by the government of both countries.
